about

"Slate is i would lay here and rot with you. Become the forest floor with you. End of time with you. But that’s not how things went down. So I’m letting it all go. Cause I can’t hold on to our love like this. But your love is safe with me. And that’s really all I have left to say to you. Slate is our ending and where we can stay. The memory of us in this specific moment in this specific light. I wanted to write this song after I couldn’t get the view from your apartment out of my head. The way the sky was wide how the air seemed thin and the birds went up and on forever. Endless light. That’s where I want to remember you, summer nights in our imagined place. It was all a big fantasy wasn’t it?"

I wrote the above towards the end of last year. Slate is romantic and sappy and inspired by a line from one of my most favorite songs. There's hope in slate, but a sad hope. A hope that I wasn't the only one feeling this warmth towards someone I didn't know anymore. A hope that even though it was over I could still find love in my heart and not be bitter and rotten on the inside forever.

lyrics

the thinnest skies on a summer night
never seen it so quiet, so wide
there's nothing left here but changing light

forest floor, slate below
we pretend we kept each other warm
warm
we'll stay warm, warm

you try to hide
but you know that i saw you
right?
time is a cruel fight, twisting knives

forest floor, slate below
we pretend we kept each other warm
warm
we'll stay warm, warm

cover us up in snow
we'll become the forest floor
slate below

we lived here, but we won't die here
we lived here
we lived here, but we won't die here
we lived here

forest floor, slate below
we pretend we kept each other warm
warm
were we warm? warm?
we were warm.
we were warm.
